Algarve Restaurant in Carvoeiro

Yet another helpful Algarve Beach Life reader has shared tips about an Algarve Restaurant in Carvoeiro - in fact, he recommends two! (the second being some way outside the town).

This time around, it's Graham Miller, from Nottingham, UK and, as you'll learn, they're more or less his 'locals' when he's vacationing in his Algarve home. Here's what Graham writes:

algarve restaurant in Carvoeiro - Maxime

It was interesting to see your comments regarding Carvoeiro, and a picture of the beach!  As house owners there for the last three years we thought we would share a couple of excellent restaurant tips with readers - although neither accepts credit cards, so take a bit of cash!

Maxime

Our favourite restaurant in Carvoeiro is "Maxime". It's on the restaurant "strip" - the Estrada do Farol, going up from the town square to the east (where the majority of the restaurants are located).  It's owned and run by a Dutch family, but the surroundings are excellent, the cuisine outstanding, and they do a number of little "touches" which separate it out, in our opinion, from the rest.  Its probably 2 euros per course more expensive than the competition round about, but well worth the difference. You'll almost certainly need to book beforehand at weekends in Summer.

Rei das Praias

Our favourite "out-of-town" restaurant is called "Rei das Praias" (King of the beaches!) Its setting is stunning, as it's built on stilts over the beautiful beach at Caneiros, midway between Carvoeiro & Ferragudo.

There's only one better viewpoint around - from the villa atop the hill

You need to go to the water tower at Seismarias, west of Carvoeiro, then follow the coast for approximately 3 miles until you descend a very steep dip, with the turn to Caneiros Beach - and the restaurant - at the bottom of the dip.

The red circle shows where you can enjoy a 'Rei das Praias' meal...

It's another family business - again cash-only, unless you have a Portuguese debit card - with a strong leaning towards beautiful fresh fish. You can pick your own out of the freezer from the "catch of the day".

A great place to watch the sun setting at the end of the day, while enjoying great hospitality.  Again, it's not cheap, but the quality is excellent and the memory of the surroundings will last far longer than the size of the bill!

It's always very busy with those "in the know" so worth booking a couple of days ahead - every day of the week in Summer, and mainly at the weekends in Winter.

We hope you enjoy these suggestions as much as we have!

Jennifer's Comment:

Thanks, of course, to Graham for sharing.

If you try out either (or both!) of his recommendations, don't forget to send me some feedback.

I did some perfunctory checking on the Maxime website, and found that starters range from 7 to 10 euros, soups from 3 to 6 euros, fish courses from 12 to 16 euros and meat dishes from 14 to 19 euros. Not too expensive if the quality and surroundings are as good as Graham suggests?

Most people I know who've tried Maxime have been very complimentary, so the owners must be doing something right. (Mental note to self: must try to eat there next time we're over that way...)
