Horse Riding in the Algarve
If you're a keen rider, then you'll love horse riding in the Algarve.
The riding centres are happy to deal with just about anyone, from beginner to Olympic standard (well, in their
dreams!) And there's
a choice of countryside or seaside scenery, depending on your preference.
Most places have English-speaking instructors, but it's always worth checking first (unless, of course, you've taken advantage
of my basic 100 Words Portuguese Language Tips, and are keen to try out your new-found linguistic abilities!)
The available options should suit just about anybody. Beginners can book an hour's ride (or two if their backsides will stand it), and
more seasoned riders can enjoy a half- or full-day hack.
Most stables are inland from the coast, but because they're keen to appeal to holidaymakers, the majority offer transportation there
and back. And for longer outings, some will provide packed meals and refreshments, (though you should check beforehand if you have any particular dietary requirements - such as being vegetarian like
me).
There are many centres for horse riding in the Algarve, such as those at Tavira, Lagos, Portimao and Albufeira, and I've heard
good things about most of them. The one that put up with my sad attempt at equestrianism was Centro Hipico da Penina in Portimão, and I can vouch for their patience
and good humour in the face of extremely questionable horsewoman-ship!
It should be easy to find good establishments offering horse riding in the Algarve, but here's a selection to start you off. Just check with them that they have everything that you want before you book a ride, then off you go...
