I was interested to learn of its unique May Day event. I've written elsewhere on Algarve Beach Life about the custom of having male and female effigies left around on May Day, usually with satirical, sad or politically-pointed poems pinned to them (see the Algarve Cycling page).
But your description was news to me, so I'm going to have to go to Alte next May Day (if I can arrange to be in Portugal at the time) and enjoy the spectacle.
