Romantic Algarve Places

If you're looking for the romantic Algarve, then you've arrived!
One of the things that first struck me about this wonderful region (and which has since been reinforced many times) is its abundance of places with that unspoilt, days-gone-by feel. Just the sort of simple, gorgeous surroundings to get those feelings of romance stirring…
It's a shame that many people have an experience of Algarve that goes no further than airport-hotel-bar-beach-nightclub-beach-hotel-airport. Of course, if you want a short, sunshine break, then that might be just the ticket…
… but the Algarve has so much more to offer – especially to romantic couples!
That got me thinking about writing this page. I wanted to produce the sort of guide that I wish I'd had when I first discovered the Algarve. I knew it had great beaches and lots of sunshine and sports facilities – but what about something for one's more sensitive side?
Romantic Algarve Recommendations
And so, I set about putting down all the places I could recall that gave me that 'buzz' when I visited. That 'glad I'm here – and glad he's here, too' feeling. I'm sure I'll remember some more, and when I do I'll add them here. But, in the meantime, here's my starter menu of romantic Algarve places.
The very first place to come to mind when I thought 'Romantic Algarve' was the west coast - especially the southwest tip of the region. That's the Cabo de Sao Vicente / Bordeira / Lagos triangle – a wonderfully desolate yet spectacular area with breathtaking views. It's impossible to underestimate the soul-stirring effect such vistas must have induced in folk from simpler times, when knowledge and education were reserved for the fortunate few.
Nowadays, of course, we're all much more worldly-wise – but I sometimes wonder whether that's really such a boon…
But, let's get back to what's on offer to those seeking a romantic Algarve experience:
Western Algarve
What to see
You do not want to miss the clifftop views at Cabo de Sao Vicente. Until the age of the explorers (many of the best being Portuguese) this was the westernmost piece of land in the known world. It was where 'the unknown' started. And when you see some of the seascapes on offer (especially on windy days) you realise how brave those sailors must have been.
The forteleza at Sagres is also a soul-stirring place to visit.

Then, it's not far from the cape to Bordeira, a few kilometres north, where a stunning beach experience can be yours. Or, if you want a more intimate setting, try Figueira. There, you'll find a cove beach that must be reached on foot, and is therefore more likely to be private (and romantic).
A little further east, there's Lagos, a fortified town with walls dating from the 15th century, and a place that featured large in Algarvean history, (not least, unfortunately, as a centre for the slave trade).
In addition to the usual stunning church interiors, you can investigate the remnants of those times past in the form of the Governor's Palacio, the Pau da Bandeira Fortress and, of course, that (surprisingly small) slave market, which was hosting an exhibition of paintings last time I visited.

Inland, and at greater elevation, there's the splendour and hushed greenery that surround Monchique. Gaze over Algarve, all the way down to the coast from atop the region's highest point at Foia, reachable via a climbing walk (not unromantically strenuous) from Monchique.
Where to stay
Quinta da Corte
If you opt for an inland stay in western Algarve, then the beautiful area around Monchique is certainly redolent of romantic Algarve.

This refuge from the modern humdrum has only 4 guest rooms, so your peace and seclusion should be undisturbed by intrusions from the noisy,
everyday world.
The accommodations are as large and commodious as you could wish, and the panoramic views from the verandas are a reward in themselves.
You and your romantic partner can experience being at one with Nature in such delightful surroundings.
And, of course, the stunning landscapes you can enjoy on the winding journey to and from such a peaceful spot are a bonus thrown in for free...
Close by, should you wish to venture outside the ageless charm of the Quinta during your romantic stay, are Foia - the roof of the Algarve - and the lovely area that surrounds the thermal spa at Caldas de Monchique.

Eastern Algarve
While it is a complete geographic contrast to the breathtaking western region, the east is nevertheless a relatively-undiscovered gem.
One of my favourite places in the whole of the region is the town of Tavira. It has an impressive history, with much to see and discover. And yet it has relatively unspoilt areas where you can step back in time and imagine yourself in a more romantic era…
Romantic Algarve Legends
There's a wonderful story from the history of Tavira about a Moorish princess and a Christian knight that I've related elsewhere in these pages.
Even if it's an embellishment, it's typical of the magic that can enhance a romantic Algarve stay. Certainly, the riverside in this town is just the sort of place that will set the mood of your visit.

There's the romance of ancient fortifications at Castro Marim, and the allure of a Guadiana river boat trip (nothing fosters togetherness like huddling under a shared blanket if the wind picks up).
And a drive up to Alcoutim and then back through the winding mountain roads via Sao Bras is guaranteed to wind up the romantic Algarve quotient – especially if you've stopped for a cuddle while you enjoyed the vistas along the way.
The ruins at Estoi and Milreu are always a welcome escape from the humdrum present, when you're trying to create the right mood. While, if it's friendly bustle you're after, then Loule markets are hard to beat. Not forgetting a calming visit to the local Mae Soberana church, with its other-worldly architecture and fabulous cross-country vistas. That should wind things down before you head off to your next trysting place for some more romantic Algarve moments…
Where to stay
Quinta do Caraçol
If you're looking for an intimate location in the beautiful
eastern Algarve, this 17th century building with its pretty grounds near Tavira
might be just the place.
There are apartments
suitable for between two and five persons, in which to enjoy
a peaceful and intimate stay. Patios, terraces or stairs achieve plenty
of separation between the various accommodations, so romantic seclusion is
virtually guaranteed!
The interior décor is simple but cosy, and as far from a 'hotel' feel as you could wish.
Quinta do Caracol is also located centrally within
Tavira town, so access to the varied attractions is possible on foot (wandering with arms entwined, of course!) Enjoy the view of the town's unique 'scissor' rooflines and that wonderful, unhurried Tavira air.
An even better view of the town can be obtained within the darkened confines of the Camera Obscura, as a knowledgeable guide talks you through the romance and history of the place. Or you can just wander around and discover its secrets at your own pace.
