Tennis Holidays
Now, tennis is a sport that I do enjoy, even if it's unlikely that I'll ever tread Wimbledon's hallowed turf (unless, that is, I can land a summer job on the ground staff). It's easy to see why there are many who dream of tennis holidays in Portugal, while they drag their shivering bodies around a tennis court amid grey skies and cold weather. So, I hardly need to point out that the Algarve's gorgeous climate makes it the ideal place to spend your tennis holidays. It's not surprising then, that the Algarve tennis clubs and schools have developed and promoted themselves to attract those who like to play their tennis somewhere warm (and easy on the eye). Wherever you stay in the region, you'll be close to an Algarve tennis centre. Just below on this page is a list to choose from. (As usual I've sorted them from west to east, for ease of location on a map). It really couldn't be simpler to arrange a holiday playing tennis in the Algarve! As I wrote in my Things To Do page, my friend Chris took her first Algarve tennis holiday around the middle of 2003, and she was so impressed that she returned a few months later. Although she didn't come back with any photographs of either stay
(drat!) her enthusiasm about her two tennis holidays in the Algarve is a ringing endorsement from someone who takes her tennis pretty seriously. TournamentsOf course, it can be fun to watch Algarve tennis, as well as to play. Throughout the year, there are lots of Algarve tennis tournaments. I like to go along and marvel at how hard the ball can be hit and still land in court! Here are some recent pics from the 2008 Ladies Open at Vale do Lobo Tennis Centre. All four contestants could really whack a ball!
And the winners' smiles say it all... the joy of effort rewarded.

Although I've always fancied the idea of tennis holidays in the Algarve, I have never got around to arranging one. It's my own fault, I
suppose... or at least, partly. If only those Algarve beaches weren't so
annoyingly attractive... 
Some package tennis holidays are available through English tennis schools that run courses in the Algarve at set times of the year, in reserved accommodation.
